The 90th Academy Awards short animation race will have 63 films in the first heat, according to a list of titles submitted for consideration obtained by Cartoon Brew. This is down just slightly from last year’s record-setting flood of 69 qualifiers. A request for confirmation of the list from the Academy went unanswered.
A short list of the Short Films & Feature Animation branch voters’ top 10 films is expected to be whittled down by late November, with the 90th Oscar nominations announcement slated for January 23. The Awards ceremony will be held Sunday, March 4, 2018, broadcast live on ABC from Hollywood.
You can read details on 50 of the qualifying festival winners/theatrical shorts in our recently published December / Oscar Preview issue, Animation Magazine No. 275.
