‘Ethel,’ ‘Louise,’ ‘Vincent’ & ‘Zombillenium’ Nominated for European Film Academy Award

The European Film Academy announced this week the four nominees for the European Animated Feature Film 2017 Award. The contenders represent the diversity of stories, styles and techniques that the European animation scene is known for:

Ethel & Ernest by Roger Mainwood (UK, Luxembourg)

Louise by the Shore (Louise en hiver) by Jean-François Laguionie (France, Canada)

Loving Vincent by Dorota Kobiela & Hugh Welchman (Poland, UK)

Zombillenium by Arthur de Pins & Alexis Ducord (France, Belgium)

The EFA’s 3,000+ members will select the winner, which will be announced at the 30th European Film Awards Ceremony on Saturday, December 9 in Berlin. More information about all EFA nominees available online.

2017 marks the first year there have been four rather than three nominees in the category, reflecting the growth of the animation features industry in Europe and worldwide. Last year’s prize went to My Life as a Zucchini by Claude Barras (France, Switzerland), which won out over Alberto Vazquez’s Psiconautas (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children) and Michael Dudok de Wit’s The Red Turtle.

This EFA award is presented to the director(s) of a European animated feature film — a film qualifies as “European” if it achieves at least 10 out of 17 points in the weighted system set up by CARTOON, the European Association of Animated Film. Further, qualifying films must be at a minimum 50% animated.
