The colorful, energetic KLIK festival of animated film has wrapped up its 10th edition in Amsterdam, capping six days of screenings, special guests (including Star vs. The Forces of Evil creator Daron Nefcy) with the KLIK Awards — dubbed “The Frankies” for the fest’s cheery, bubblegum-pink mascot.
The 2017 competition drew in 1,975 entries representing 80 countries, from Iceland to India. The juried award for Best Animated Short went to Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata’s much-lauded stop-motion/CG poetry piece Negative Space (trailer). The French-produced short has been well received at festivals worldwide, and has qualified for the Academy Awards race with the Anima Mundi Grand Prix.
Best Animated Student Short (powered by Cartoon Network) went to Flower Found! by Jorn Leeuwerink (Vimeo), a 2017 graduate of HKU University of the Arts Utrecht in The Netherlands. Other top juried honors went to Spectacle of the Real from Hulk Limbo, Inc. (Commissioned Animation), Bob Los’ In Memory (Virtual Reality), and Mark Lotterman’s “Happy” by Alice Saey won Best Animated Music Video (powered by Xite).
