AFM: ‘Underdogs’ Filmmakers Set Next Argentine Toon ‘Escape to India’

The creative whizzes behind record-setting Argentine animated movie Underdogs (a.k.a. Metegol or The Unbeatables) have re-teamed for a new flagship feature titled Escape to India, according to Variety. Oscar-winning writer-director Juan José Campanella (The Secret in Their Eyes) and director-producer Gastón Gorali are joined by powerhouse producer-director-songwriter Cris Morena (Rebelde, Amor mio) for the project.

Based on a children’s book by Gorali and Marcelo Birjmajer, the family-friendly musical comedy centers on a cow named Azadi. Born in Argentina’s Patagonia territory in 1940 and destined for the slaughterhouse, Azadi decides to follow her belief that cows are sacred and safe in India, no matter what the rest of the herd thinks. The brave bovine sets out on an epic journey up through the Americas, across the Bering Strait, and down through Mongolia to her destination.

Gorali told Variety that the story lands Azadi in India during the last stretch of its struggle for independence from Britain, and will see the cow learn about Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance.

Escape to India is being produced by Mundoloco CGI, founded by Campanella, Gorali, Jorge Estrada and Roberto Schroder. Gorali is directing, with Campanella producing and Morena composing the original songs. One of the biggest digital studios in Latin America, Mundoloco is seeking co-production partners for this high profile project. In addition to Underdogs, the studio produces series including Floribella and Mini Beat Power Rockers.
