‘Coco,’ ‘Loving Vincent’ Honored by National Board of Review

The New York-based National Board of Review has picked Pixar’s Coco as the Best Animated Movie of the Year. The 108-year-old New York-based organization is made up of “film enthusiasts, filmmakers, professionals and academics,” and is usually the first critics group to come up with its year-end honors, often in November. The organization also picked Loving Vincent as one of its top 10 independent movies of the year.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot received the organization’s Spotlight Award. In addition, NBR picked Steven Spielberg’s latest pic The Post as the year’s best film. Other honorees include Meryl Streep as best actress and Tom Hanks as best actor. Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project) and Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird) received supporting actor and actress awards. Greta Gerwig won the Best Director prize for Lady Bird.

The NBR awards gala will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York.
