One of the projects selected for the Animation! section at the upcoming Ventana Sur film market in Buenos Aires (Nov. 27-Dec. 1, ventana-sur.com) will be Mexico’s first stop-motion animated feature, Variety reports. Titled Inzomnia and currently in pre-production, the film is being directed by Luis Téllez Ibarra and produced by his Viva el Rey collaborators Paula Astorga Riestra and Milko Luis Coronel.
The $2 million project centers on a 10-year-old girl named Camila, the sole resident of an afflicted city unaffected by an “insomnia pill” that keeps everyone awake and working like automatons for a ruthless businessman — including her parents.
The Inzomnia Animación production has begun shooting in Guadalajara, having previously participated in the Gap-Financing market in Venice. Téllez has created several animated shorts, including producing and animating Karla Castañeda Jacinta, which won Best Iberoamerican Short at the 22nd Guadalajara Int’l Film Festival.
This year’s Ventana Sur Animation! Pitching Sessions for feature film and TV received 180 registrations, a record-setting number and over 50% increase from last year. Projects representing 14 countries across Latin America were considered for selection by representatives from MIFA/Annecy. The participants are:
