Game School Online Opens Winter Enrollment

Game School Online — the first and only tuition-free online videogame development school, launched in April — has opened enrollment for its winter term, which begins in January 2018. GSO currently offers curricula in environment art and lighting for games, with a focus on Unreal Engine 4. Two new courses are on offer for winter term: “Advanced Lighting Concepts with Unreal Engine 4” and “Advanced Hard Surface Modeling.”

This week, GSO is also presenting a free online workshop on “Animating for Games and Movies” with Veara Suon, Senior Animator at Double Negative. Suon has worked in the AAA games industry, on franchises like Destiny and Bioshock, and for top studios like Weta, ILM and Sony on films including Pacific Rim 2, Spider-Man and Avengers. The workshops will include tips and techniques from Suon, advice for students seeking jobs, tips on shifting between gigs in games and films, and job relocation.

The hour long workshop will be followed by a Q&A, with the program kicking off December 14 at 8 p.m. PST. The workshop is free; RSVP via Facebook.

GSO also maintains a roster of scholars — working industry professionals — available to mentor students. These include Brian Yam (Director of Visual Development, Section Studios), Olaf Piesche (Senior Engineer, Epic Games), Kevin DeBolt (World Artist, 343 Industries), Rosie Katz (Senior Game Designer; EA, Visceral, Sledgehammer Games), Leo Gonzalez (Senior Artist, Certain Affinity), and Brandon Pham (Lead Environment Artist).
