ShortsTV (www.shorts.tv) has teamed up with Magnolia Pictures to once again offer cinephiles around the world the chance to catch all the short film Academy Awards contenders on the big screen, with “The 2018 Oscar Nominated Short Films” program set to hit more than 500 theaters in the US, Canada, Europe, Latin America, South Africa and Australia on February 9. This rollout will be preceded by a special preview screening event at New York City’s IFC Center on Feb. 7.
The screenings will include the Animation, Live Action and Documentary short film nominees organized into three separate theatrical events. This run marks the 13th consecutive year of the Oscar Nominated Short Films theatrical experience, which give general audiences a chance to see the shorts ahead of the big Hollywood shindig. The annual event continues to gain popularity, taking in nearly $3 million worldwide box office gross in 2017 — double the level from two years prior.
“Short films every year are just an amazing way to see new things that are happening in film,” Carter Pilcher, Chief Executive at ShortsTV said. “You can get a much better sense of new techniques, new ways of storytelling. The thing about going to watch a group of short films like the Oscar nominees, they’re the top of the heap. You’re seeing the young talent coming through with new approaches, and new approaches to old ideas.”

The 90th Academy Awards will take place March 4, televised live on ABC.
