The nominees have been announced for the inaugural edition of the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards, taking place April 7 on the Spanish island of Tenerife. In total, 54 works from 10 different countries were nominated across nine categories. Spain was the country with the most representation, scoring 21 nods. Mexican animation scored the second-most nominations with a distant but respectable 12, and Brazil came third with six. The most-nominated projects were the short films Way of Giants (Alois di Leo, Brazil) and Cerulia (Sofia Carrillo, Mexico) with four each, followed by Tad, the Lost Explorer and the Secret of King Midas (Enrique Gato & David Alonso, Spain) with three.
The announcement was made Wednesday at Ochoymedio during Andean Call, an event for Andean animation projects in development taking place in Quito this week. The presenters were Eliana Champutiz, Technical Director of the Film and Audiovisual Creation Institute; José Luis Farias, promoter of the initiative; Paul Vaca, head of international relations; and Paco Rodríguez, ambassador of the awards in Spain and member of the selection committee.
Nominees were selected by a panel of international professionals: Loïc Portier (France), Barry O’Donoghue (Ireland), Agnieszka Kowalewska-Skowron (Poland), and Paco Rodríguez & Zulay Rodríguez (Spain). The 54 nominees will be narrowed to three finalists in each category by an international jury, to be announced next month.
