Add one more to the list of superhero movies oversaturating the market, as Teen Titans GO! To the Movies very self-deprecatingly heralds. A new trailer has signaled the impending arrival of the cinematic adaptation of Teen Titans GO!, arriving July 27th, 2018. Or rather we’re getting the cinematic adaptation of the animated show that’s a parody/spin-off of another animated show that was itself an adaptation of a series of DC comics that have been running since the ‘60s that infused the source material with aesthetics heavily influenced by anime. Keeping track? The trailer preserves the shows roots as parody by poking fun at its own status as one of multitudes of superhero movies clogging the theaters, extolling itself as “The Super Hero Movie to End All Super Hero Movies, Hopefully,” and drawing attention to the fact that Wonder Woman is the only recent DC movie to find any real critical success.
The movie’s not-so-subtly-meta synopsis relates the story of Robin, (Scott Menville) tired of perpetually lurking in Batman’s shadow, and his efforts to prove himself a top superhero by convincing megastar film director Jade Wilson (Kristen Bell) to make a Teen Titans film. But first he needs to prove the Teen Titans are more than a joke with the help of his team, all while Robin’s arch enemy Slade (Will Arnett, starring in his second DC parody after last year’s LEGO Batman) hatches a new scheme in the background. In addition to Menville, the entire cast from the show reprises their roles, including Robin’s bubbly space-girlfriend Starfire (Hynden Walch) goth/emo half-demon Raven (Tara Strong) buff robot Cyborg (Khary Payton) and lackadaisical animal morpher Beast Boy (Greg Cipes).
