The latest short to hatch from the GO! Cartoons incubator program, titled Kid Arthur, has launched on the Cartoon Hangover YouTube channel, putting a modern and youthful spin on the ancient Arthurian legends. Produced by Frederator (part of WOW! Unlimited Media) and backed by Sony Pictures Animation, the cartoon was created by British animation duo Joel Veitch and David Shute, of rathergood.com.
Kid Arthur recasts the British lore which has inspired countless works of art and entertainment, as it follows young mortal foes/best friends Arthur and Mordred. They are the only magic kids in their school, and that magic causes chaotic mayhem at every turn. When Mordred summons a dragon to help pass a test, Arthur intervenes with his mighty sword Excalibur to stop him from cheating, but the battle spirals out of control.
“Like everyone, we’ve always loved the tales of heroic King Arthur and evil warlock Mordred,” says Veitch. “For nearly a thousand years the story has been shrouded in the mists of Arthurian romance… now we’ve had great fun reimagining them as kids in a normal modern day school. Navigating the pitfalls of school life is hard enough, but it’s ten times worse if you’re magic and your best friend is constantly trying to destroy you with ogres and dragons. If people love it as much as we do, then a series could become a reality.”
