Organizers of Asia’s premiere toon celebration, the Bucheon International Animation Festival in South Korea, have revealed the films screening in its national and international shorts, commissioned films and online categories. This year, the selection committee received 2,412 submissions from 88 countries — most hailed from the US, Iran, the UK, France, Taiwan, Germany and South Korea, which prompted the addition of a Korean Short Competition. This marked a 58% increase in submissions over last year.
As announced in January, BIAF is now an Academy Award qualifying festival. The winner of the Short Film Grand Prize will be eligible for considering for the Best Animated Short Film Oscar.
The 20th BIAF will take place October 19-23. See the full list of short film selections below the beautiful official trailer, created by 2018 Jury President Sunao Katabuchi (In This Corner of the World), “White Rabbit.” See all the announced category selections here.
