Animated GIF sharing/hosting platform GIPHY is building on its commitment to the micro-entertainment medium by launching the first GIPHY Film Fest. The challenge put to content creators: can you grab an audience’s attention and deliver an entertaining story in under 18 seconds? The contenders will be screened one night only on November 8 in New York City’s Metrograph Theater, where the grand prize winner will be announced and an afterparty will follow.
The inaugural GIPHY Film Fest judges are artist and filmmaker Mukunda Angulo (Window Feel, Mirror Heart, The Wolfpack), Spotify Global Creative Director Alex Bodman, The Animation Guild’s Director of Communications & Culture (and Animation Instructor at CalArt) Brooke Keesling, Squarespace creative David Lee, producer Mona Panchal, comedian Joe Pera (Joe Pera Talks You to Sleep for Adult Swim), and Julia Rothman,illustrator/author/educator and co-founder of Women Who Draw.
The Grand Prize winner will receive $10,000 as well as a five-year website subscription to supporter Squarespace, and an opportunity to guest curate an official playlist on Spotify.
Submissions are open now through the September 27, 2018 deadline to US residents age 18 and over. Creators can submit up to three pieces of work (up to 18 seconds of loopable content each) with or without sound in the categories of Narrative, Stop-Motion, Animated, Experimental, and Wild Card/Other.
