Actors Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), Danai Gurira (Black Panther, Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast), Leslie Mann (This Is 40, ParaNorman) and Golden Globe winner Christian Slater (Mr. Robot, Milo Murphy’s Law) took to the stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California on Thursday morning to announce the nominees for the upcoming 76th Golden Globe Awards. The honors are presented annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 25 film and television categories.
Ahead of the reveal, HFPA President Meher Tatna announced that a new special achievement award, equivalent to the Cecil B. DeMille Award for film, will be introduced in 2019 to honor the highest achievement in television.
The Best Motion Picture – Animated nominees are Incredibles 2 (Pixar), Isle of Dogs (Fox Searchlight), Mirai (GKIDS), Ralph Breaks the Internet (Disney) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Sony).
Isle of Dogs also nabbed a nomination in the Best Original Score – Motion Picture category for Alexandre Desplat, who is up against Marco Beltrami (A Quiet Place), Ludwig Goransson (Black Panther — also up for Best Original Song for “All the Stars”), Justin Hurwitz (First Man) and Marc Shaiman (Mary Poppins Returns).
Several more nods went to Disney’s partially animated sequel Mary Poppins Returns in the Musical or Comedy categories for Best Motion Picture, up against Crazy Rich Asians, The Favourite and Vice; as well as Best Actor (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and Best Actress (Emily Blunt).
Marvel’s vfx-heavy superhero smash hit Black Panther is among the Best Motion Picture – Drama contenders, with BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, If Beale Street Could Talk and A Star Is Born.
Pixar’s Coco won the animated feature category at the 2018 Golden Globes, securing the award for the eighth time.
The 76th Golden Globe Award will air live on NBC on Sunday, January 6 from 5-8 p.m. PT, hosted by Golden Globe winners Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy) and Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine).
