‘Minions’ Sequel ‘Rise of Gru’ Coming in 2020

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have bestowed a title on the sequel to hit 2015 spin-off flick Minions. Joining the Despicable Me franchise will be Minions: The Rise of Gru, set for a July 3, 2020 theatrical debut.

The supervillain star of the series, Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) was shown as a young boy in the first Minions movie, which explored the origins of the little yellow henchmen and followed them on their quest to find a suitably evil baddie to serve. Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda helmed the adventure, which featured the voices of Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, Jennifer Saunders and Geoffrey Rush.

Balda is set to direct the sequel, with Brad Ableson as co-director; casting and plot details are TBA.

Minions made $1.16 billion at the global box office and was the first film in the property to pass the billion dollar mark. The combined Despicable Me and Minions movies have raked in more than $3.7 billion around the world, making it the highest-grossing animated feature franchise.
