WarnerMedia has placed a 10-episode order for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, a new half-hour animated prequel to the cult hit 1984 movie. Previously announced in development, the toon is being produced by Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation (the original Gremlins was an Amblin-Warner production) and is written by Tze Chun (Gotham, Once Upon a Time).
Secrets of the Mogwai will follow the childhood adventures of the film’s mysterious shop owner, Mr. Wing (played by Keye Luke), and his loveable furry timebomb. In 1920s Shanghai, 10-year-old Sam Wing meets a young Mogwai called Gizmo. Together with a teenage street thief named Elle, the new friends set out on a perilous journey to return Gizmo to his family, encountering and sometimes battling colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. As they search for the Mogwai’s home (and a legendary treasure), the young heroes are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
The series is executive produced by Amblin TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, and Sam Register (Animaniacs), with Chun and Brendan Hay (Robot Chicken) serving as co-executive producers. Dan Krall (Coraline) is a supervising producer.
Amblin TV is also currently working on the new Animaniacs series, set to debut on Hulu in 2020.
