‘Abominable’ to Make Box Office Ascent Toward $20M Opening

DreamWorks Animation’s new Himalayan adventure Abominable is expected to kick off with an avalanche of ticket sales this weekend. According to box office experts, the pic is aiming for a domestic opening of $17-$20 million. Directed and written by Jill Culton with Todd Wilderman as co-director, the 3D CG flick is DWA’s first co-production with Pearl Studios in China, where Abominable will open on Tuesday.

The family-friendly yeti escapade is up against the Downton Abbey movie, which had a better-than-expected debut last weekend with $31 million. Both these top contenders are released by Universal Pictures.

Synopsis: When teenager Yi (Chloe Bennet, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, she and her mischievous friends, Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai), name him “Everest” and embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth. But the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish (Eddie Izzard), a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) to help Everest get home.
