This weekend, LightBox Expo will gather more than 250 of the top artists behind your favorite animation, live-action, illustration and gaming masterpieces in Southern California’s Pasadena Convention Center, Sept. 6-8.
One of the highlights of LBX 2019 will be the inaugural Concept Art Awards, hosted by the Concept Art Association — the first award of its kind to recognize and bring increased awareness of the role that concept artists throughout the world of movies, television, video games and more. In addition to honors for excellence in student, independent and fan character and environment art, the CAAs will bestow Lifetime Achievement Awards on legendary artists H.R. Giger (Alien), Ralph McQuarrie (Star Wars), Jean “Moebius” Giraud (TRON), Ron Cobb (Back to the Future) and Syd Mead (Blade Runner).
The CAAs will be emceed by Jonah Ray (Mystery Science Theater 3000) and feature presenters such as Iain McCaig (Star Wars), Neville Page (Star Trek), Mingjue Helen Chen (Ralph Breaks the Internet), Bobby Chiu (Alice in Wonderland), Robh Ruppel (Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End), Dan Luvisi and many more special guests joining the show throughout the night. Founded by character designer and illustrator Bobby Chiu, the team at Schoolism, and Emerald City Comic Con founder Jim Demonakos, the three-day event aims to bring together artists to share their work, connect with other creatives, further their skills and educate up-and-comers in these industries. LBX will offer portfolio reviews, instructed life drawing, panels, live demos, special programming and much more.
