Cinekid and MediaLab Award Winners Revealed

On Friday evening at the Cinekid Festival in Amsterdam, the jury and audience awards were presented for the best youth TV programs and children’s films of 2019. U.K. student film Heatwave was awarded Best International Animated Short, with Heer & Meester Film’s At First Sight taking the Lion for Dutch animation.

The winners of the MediaLab, Cinekid’s digital interactive exhibition, were announced on Thursday. The jury award for Best of MediaLab was presented to the virtual reality experience Eden’s Adventure by artist Abner Preis. The audience award was handed to the virtual reality game Museum of Symmetry by Canadian animator Paloma Dawkins.

At the Junior Co-Production Market of the industry event Cinekid for Professionals, an expert jury selected the best projects for youth media:

Eurimages Co-Production Development Award (Jury Award € 20,000)
Snot and Splash, directed by Teemu Nikki and written by Ilja Rautsi. Produced by It’s Alive Films (FI). Snot and Splash is a previous Cinekid Script LAB project from 2018-2019.

A special mention was given to the project Totem, directed by Sander Burger and written by Bastiaan Tichler & Sander Burger. Produced by Volya Films (NL).

Best TV Project Award (Jury Award € 10,000)
Art Mysteries, directed by Martijn Blekendaal and produced by Cerutti Film (NL, DE).

A special mention went to Folk Tales from Papua New Guinea, written & directed by Katherine Winfrey and Ursula Ulmi. Produced by Ulmi Film and Studio Epictus (CH, PG).

Filmmore Post-Production Award (Jury Award € 5,000)
The Summer Dad Went Gay, directed by Petter Naess and written by Endre Lund Eriksen. Produced by Fabelfjord AS (NO).

The Cinekid Honorary Award was handed to Bea Appels and Dick de Jonge for their outstanding contribution to youth film. For almost four decades their distribution company Twin Film released numerous children’s films in the Netherlands
