GKIDS to Release Shinkai’s ‘Weathering With You’ in January

GKIDS has set a North American release date for Makoto Shinkai’s highly anticipated animated feature, Weathering With You. Written and directed by Shinkai and produced by Genki Kawamura, the follow-up to 2017’s Your Name. arrives in U.S. theaters on January 17, 2020.

Recently picked as Japan’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Film, Weathering With You was also selected to screen at TIFF and as the Opening Night film for this month’s Animation Is Film Festival at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood (Oct. 18-20).

Produced by Toho, the film follows a rural high school boy who runs away to Tokyo, where both his prospects and the weather turn gloomy. Things change when he meets an unusual orphan girl who seems to be able to manipulate the weather.

The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…
