Apple TV+ has given a straight-to-series order for Strange Planet, a new animated series from co-creators and executive producers Emmy winner Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty, Community) and Nathan Pyle, who created the beloved webcomic and bestselling graphic novels of the same name.
The show will tell profound and heartfelt stories about beings on a distant planet not unlike our own. Amalia Levari will serve as showrunner of the whimsical and comical series.
Strange Planet is produced by Apple Studios and award-winning animation studio and production house ShadowMachine (BoJack Horseman, Final Space). Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico executive produce for ShadowMachine. Steve Levy and Taylor Alexy Pyle also serve as executive producers on the project.
Harmon is the creator and executive producer of long-running comedy series Community, garnering multiple Emmy nominations, Critics Choice Awards and more accolades. He is also the co-creator and executive producer of Rick and Morty, which won Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program in 2018 and 2020. In 2015, he executive produced the Oscar-nominated animated feature film Anomalisa.
Strange Planet joins the upcoming slate of Apple Originals that will be produced by Apple Studios, including live-action projects from top creators like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Susannah Grant and more. The streamer’s original animated series include adult musical sitcom Central Park and kids & family series Doug Unplugs, Stillwater, Snoopy in Space and The Snoopy Show.
After its launch on November 1, 2019, Apple TV+ became the first all-original streaming service to launch around the world (available in over 100 countries and regions), and has premiered more original hits and received more award recognitions faster than any other streaming service in its debut. To date, Apple Original films, documentaries and series have been honored with 116 wins and 389 awards nominations.
