Watch: Barbie Takes on Broadway in Mattel’s New Animated Special

Mattel’s famous doll leaves her home in Malibu to attend a prestigious school for performing arts in New York City in Mattel’s new animated special Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams. The hour-long musical which is set to premiere on Netflix on Sept. 1, introduces a new lead character whose name is—wait for it—Barbie “Brooklyn” Roberts!

After 20 years, 36 television specials, and countless episodic and YouTube series, the latest original film from Mattel Television marks the expansion of the Barbie universe with the introduction of a new lead, another Barbie Roberts. The two Barbies discover that that they have much more in common than just their names – like their shared dream of making it on Broadway. Of course, they also discover that competition isn’t only about winning; it’s about striving to be your best while bringing out the best in your competitors!

The special also introduces:

  • Emmie, a shy but famous pop star who was “Brooklyn” Roberts’ childhood best friend and she also attends the summer program at the Handler Arts Academy in disguise in order to study without being recognized.
  • Rafa, an aspiring costume designer and self-proclaimed fashionista, Rafa quickly becomes BFF with both Barbies. Quick with one-liners, this creative whirlwind has a soft spot for both Barbies and his dog, Gato – the true love of his life.

Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams is directed by Scott Pleydell-Pearce (Bob the Builder, Blaze and the Monster Machines), produced by Rony Myrick (Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?), exec produced by Frederic Soulie, Christopher Keenan and Adam Bonnett. Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams was written by Christopher Keenan and Kate Splaine with songs  by Alison McDonald. Mainframe Animation delivered the show’s animation.

“We have barely scratched the surface of the stories we can tell for Barbie and her friends and look forward to weaving them through the Barbie content universe,” says Christopher Keenan, Co-writer and exec producer of the special and senior VP of global content at Mattel TV.

Mattel and Warner Music Group’s Arts Music are also releasing  Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams, a companion soundtrack to the new musical adventure, Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams on digitial download and on streaming services today. This new EP features songs and duets from the upcoming special, including “See You at the Finish Line.” All the songs underscore the special’s themes with lyrics about perseverance, mastery of craft, and finding multiple paths to success.
