Matt Reeves Inks First-Look Deal with WB Studios After ‘Caped Crusader’ Cancellation

Writer-director-producer Matt Reeves (The Batman, War for the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield) has inked an overall first-look deal with Warner Bros. Pictures Group — marking the first such agreement since Co-Chairs/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy were hired on by Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav.

The pact will give the film Group’s production divisions, including Warner Animatoin Group, first-look rights to Reeves’ work as a writer, director and/or producer. He is currently working on a sequel to The Batman.

On top of the film deal, Reeves has renewed the partnership between Warner Bros. Television Group and his shingle 6th & Idaho ahead of the start of production for The Batman spin-off series The Penguin, slated for HBO Max.

Reeves was attached as an executive producer (with Bruce Timm and J.J. Abrams) of the B:TAS reimagined series Batman:Caped Crusader, which has just been ditched by HBO Max, and was also set to produce Wes Ball’s Mouse Guard animated feature, which was cancelled by Disney following its acquisition of 20th Century Fox. While the hitmaker has yet to deliver an animated project, these deals open the doors for both feature and episodic animation, likely playing in the always hot DC properties sandbox.
