The luck of the Irish is with ten Ireland-based animation and interactive content companies that will split up a €350,000 ($345,000) funding stash distributed by the State development agency Screen Ireland in collaboration with the Animation Ireland trade association.
Announcements were delivered at Furthr Festival (formerly known as Futurescope) which took place today in Dublin.
Some of the imaginative projects and concepts chosen for this Animation Innovation and Immersive Development Fund 2022 included Algorithm’s immersive experience that tracks storms across the Atlantic Ocean, Turnip + Duck’s educational app teaching young kids about the periodic table of elements and other science concepts, and EZ Films’ virtual reality project that tells the story of Dublin’s demolished Theatre Royal.
Per The Irish Times, Additional recipients of the funding prize are Out Left Productions, Little Moon Animation, Emily Aoibheann/1iing heaney, Emagine, Calico Media, And Maps and Plans, and AdventurVerse Studios.
Screen Ireland’s animation fund is supported by Immersive Technologies Skillnet and seeks to illuminate Ireland as a nexus of animation excellence by urging Irish animators to explore opportunities offered by emerging technologies and developing new intellectual properties.
“Animation is at the cutting edge of new technology in the XR and immersive space and the breadth and quality of the applications is very encouraging,” said Animation Ireland chief executive Ronan McCabe. “We look forward to the delivery of the projects over the coming months and to seeing them showcased in 2023.”
The Irish animation sector has seen rapid growth over the past ten years, with successful studios such as Cartoon Saloon, Brown Bag Films, Boulder Media, Jam Media, Lighthouse Studios, Monster Entertainment and Giant Animation producing top-notch projects that are enjoyed by audiences all over the world.
