As moviegoers around the world eagerly await the theatrical rollout of Alberto Vázquez’s new animated feature Unicorn Wars (which premiered in Spain in October), the Goya Award-winning animation director’s acclaimed short Homeless Home has been made available to stream for free on YouTube, via French producer/distributor Autour de Minuit’s Animatic channel.
In the 15-minute short, expressive, monochromatic animation carries the viewer through a dark fantasy world, where characters of many different descriptions find themselves equally adrift.
As Vázquez — whose also created the much-lauded short films Bird Boy, Unicorn Blood and Decorado as well as the feature film Bird Boy: The Forgotten Children — told Animation Magazine in a 2021 interview, Homeless Home was inspired by the fantasy books he read as a child, and the idea “to work from a world similar to The Lord of the Rings, but from a personal perspective … a kind of social and existential history contextualized in a medieval fantasy world.”
No one can escape their roots,
however rotten they may be.
Homeless Home is a France/Spain co-production of Autour de Minuit and Uniko.
