‘Avatar’ and ‘Puss in Boots’ Sequels Rule a Stellar Four-Day Christmas Box Office

The official box office numbers from the studios have finally arrived, and as everyone guessed, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water was the number one movie with a brilliant $95.5 million for its second four-day weekend. The film, which is the first part of the director’s ambitious quartet of Avatar sequels is close to making $1 billion worldwide. The 20th Century film’s total cume to date is $293.2 million, which is 26% ahead of the original Avatar’s first 11 days at the box office in 2009.

Meanwhile, everyone’s favorite cavalier cat, Puss in Boots continues to hold the second spot at the box office. DreamWorks’ Animation’s sequel The Last Wish had a four day box office of $19.2 million, making its two-week cume a pawsome $26.1 million, and its global take $58.6 million.

Disney’s Strange World is hanging on at number  10 with a 4-day holiday total of $655,000 and an overall cume of $35.8 million after five weeks. The Thanksgiving release, which was sadly one of Disney’s lowest grossing animated features, is now available to stream on Disney+.
