The Critics Choice Association (CCA) announced today the TV category nominees for the 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards. The winners will be revealed at a gala ceremony, which will broadcast live on The CW from the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 15, 2023 (7–10 p.m. ET, delayed PT – check local listings).
While the majority live-action categories are ruled by multiply-nominated titles Abbot Elementary (ABC, six nominations), Better Call Saul (AMC, five), Gaslit (Starz), Reservation Dogs (FX) and The Good Fight (Paramount) (four each), the Best Animated Series contenders are a notable cross section a today’s broad TV toon landscape.
The six animation nomination slots are dominated by primetime 2D comedies with Bob’s Burgers, Harley Quinn and Star Trek: Lower Decks. However, the list also includes breakout Aussie kids’ hit Bluey, which has found a wider audience with appreciative parents and caregivers, as well as more adventurous adult fare in the acclaimed non-dialog horror-actioner Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal and the visually intrepid sci-fi dramedy Undone.
Bluey is nominated for the second year in a row, while Bob’s Burgers is up for the ninth time (second consecutive) — including 2021, when the category was temporarily rehomed in the inaugural Critics’ Choice Super Awards. Undone was nominated in 2019.
Harley Quinn was nominated in three categories at the Supers, winning Best Voice Actress in an Animated Series for Kaley Cuoco’s title performance. Lower Decks was also nominated in the voice actor/actress categories, and this year makes its Best Animated Series nomination debut at the CCAs.
