BAFTA Announces TV & Craft Award Nominees for 2023

The British Academy has announced the nominees for the 2023 BAFTA Television Awards, including the TV Craft Awards, recognized a total of 128 programs from a record-breaking number of entries across both honors categories. While the most nominations went to medical comedy-drama This Is Going to Hurt and police drama The Responder (six nods each), effects and animation achievements were also represented by standout projects.

The Television Award winners will be announced during a ceremony hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan broadcasting Sunday, May 14 on BBC One and iPlayer. The TV Craft Awards will be held on Sunday, April 23.

Nominees in the Special, Visual & Graphic Effects category are:

  • Angus Bickerton, Nikeah Forde, Asa Shoul, Mike Dawson, MPC, Pixomondo – House of the Dragon – HBO, 1:26 Pictures, Bastard Sword, GRRM Productions/Sky Atlantic
  • Industrial Light & Magic – The Sandman – Netflix Original Series, Warner Bros. Television/Netflix
  • Mohen Leo, TJ Falls, Richard Van Den Bergh, Jean-Clement Soret, Industrial Light & Magic – Andor – Lucasfilm/Disney+
  • Russell Dodgson, Bryony Duncan, Sam Chynoweth, Damien Stumpf, Danny Hargreaves, Eliot Gibbins – His Dark Materials – Bad Wolf/BBC One

House of the Dragon is also nominated for Make Up & Hair Design and Sound: Fiction. Andor tacked on nods for Supporting Actress (Fiona Shaw) and Editing: Fiction.

Also of note to animation lovers is a breakout nomination for the stop-motion Nexus Studios/Netflix event anthology The House, which is competing for Single Drama against I Am Ruth and Life and Death in the Warehouse. Nominees are Paloma Baeza, Niki Lindroth von Bahr, Emma de Swaef, Marc James Roels, Charlotte Bavasso, Christopher O’Reilly.

The bizarre world of live-action/puppet/mixed-media series Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared, produced by Blink Industries and airing on Channel 4’s All 4, also earned two nominations, for Costume Design and Production Design. Creators/director Becky Sloan and Joe Pelling are the named nominees for both.
