Crunchyroll today announced the English-language dub cast for the critically acclaimed, box office hit new Makoto Shinkai animated feature Suzume, set to debut in theaters in Australia and New Zealand on April 13 and in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Ireland on April 14.
In the titular role is Nichole Sakura, who starred in the six-season NBC sitcom Superstore and more recently appeared in the American remake of Ghosts and psychic sci-fi comedy Maggie. Sakura has added a number of voiceover credits to her resume in the last several years, with guest appearances on OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, Robot Chicken, Where’s Waldo, Big Hero 6: The Series, Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-head, Central Park and the new Disney Channel series Kiff. She also voice starred in the Star Wars Visions episode “The Village Bride.”
The cast list also includes Josh Keaton (Tiger & Bunny, It’s Pony), Jennifer Sun Bell (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), Joe Zieja (Transformers: War for Cybertron), Rosalie Chang (Turning Red), Amanda C. Miller (Boruto: Naruto Next Generations), Mela Lee (Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir) and prolific voice actor Cam Clarke (Akira, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, High Guardian Spice). Bill Millsap is the film’s English-language voice director.
The latest film from celebrated director Shinkai (Weathering With You, Your Name.) centers on 17-year-old Suzume, whose life in a quiet town is changed forever when she encounters a young man “looking for a door.” When Suzume opens this strange door standing alone in the midst of ruins, it triggers doors all over Japan to open, unleashing disasters wherever they appear. With her new companion transformed into a chair by a magical cat, she takes up his quest to close these doors and avert further destruction.
Produced by Shinkai’s CoMix Wave Films and STORY inc., Suzume debuted in Japan on November 11, staying #1 at the local box office for three consecutive weeks. Crunchyroll acquired global distribution and marketing rights (excl. Asia) from Toho; additional distribution partners are Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International and Eurozoom.
Sakura is represented by Gersh and Ginsburg Daniels Dallis.
