All-Star Cast Boards R-Rated Hybrid Flick ‘Animal Friends’ from Legendary

Legendary Pictures (Godzilla vs. Kong, Detective Pikachu) is planning a new live-action/animation creature feature with Animal Friends. Described as an “R-rated road trip adventure,” the project is being directed by Emmy winner Peter Atencio (Key and Peele, The Machine) and written by Kevin Burrows (The Croods) and Matt Mider, the creative duo behind GQ animated series Gentlemen Lobsters.

The studio revealed today that the to-be-detailed film will star Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool 3, Detective Pikachu, The Croods: A New Age), Jason Momoa (Fast X, The LEGO Movie 2), Vince Vaughn (Bad Monkey, F Is for Family) and Aubrey Plaza (Megalopolis, Little Demon). It was not clarified whether their characters will be live acting or voice over roles.

Animal Friends was reportedly conceived during a meeting between Burrows & Mider and Patrick Gooing, an executive at Reynolds’ Maximum Effort prodco. The film is being produced by Legendary, Maximum Effort and Prime Focus Studios, with DNEG tapped for VFX and animation (Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Ron’s Gone Wrong).
