Bowza! Universal/Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie has shattered box office records this weekend. Domestically, it is projected to bring in around $204 million during its 5-day opening time frame. It’s also estimated to have a $377.5 million worldwide week, which makes it the biggest animated movie opening of all time, beating Frozen $358 million record from 2019. Way to go, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Toad!
According to Deadline, the movie scored a massive $146.36 million box office gross Stateside during its three-day, and a record five-day take of $204.6 million. The previous record for a five-day opening was held by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’s $200 million box-office back in 2009.
Universal Domestic Distribution Chief Jim Orr told Deadline on Sunday, “The incredible partnership of Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto’s iconic characters, with Illumination and Chris Meledandri’s unbeatable filmmaking and storytelling prowess, has led to this combustible moment at the worldwide box office. Audiences of all ages and backgrounds have flocked to theaters to revel in this extraordinary big-screen celebration.”
Critically, the movie got some mixed reviews, which featured raves about the Illumination’s beautiful and brightly colored animation, while others complained about some story issues. Currently, the movie is rating a mediocre a 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, general audiences gave Super Mario Bros a winning score of 96% on Audience Score.
Incidentally, Warner Bros’ holds the record for the top-grossing Easter weekend opening with the 2016 pic Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which had a $181 million opening.
