Nintendo/Illumination’s energetic plumber brothers are showing no signs of losing steam as The Super Mario Bros Movie had another cash-filled weekend at the box office. The Universal release brought in an estimated $58.2 million Stateside, setting a new record for best third weekend for an animated movie ever, beating the previous record held by Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles in June-July of 2018.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, The Super Mario Bros. Movie also had the distinction of becoming the third highest-grossing Universal title of all time with a domestic box office gross of $434.3 million, behind Jurassic World ($653.4 million) and E.T The Extraterrestrial ($437.1 million).
Worldwide, the movie is estimated to finish the weekend with a $871.8 million total and a $70/7 million from 78 overseas markets. That means the blockbuster will hit the big $900 million and $1 billion benchmarks in the next few days as it will be released in Japan and Korea this upcoming week as well.).
Crunchyroll also had a good weekend with Suzume posting a $1.62 million, bringing its two weekend cume to $8.4 million. The acclaimed movie by Makoto Shinkai, which was released in Japan last November, made over $104.682 million in its home country, and has a cume of $158.947 million worldwide to date.
