The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued its list of new member invitees, including dozens of talented filmmakers across animated short film and features as well as visual effects. This year’s total number of invitations is 398, one more than last year. If the entire class of 2023 accepts, this will bring total members (including Emeritus) to 10,817, and voting members to 9,375.
Among those invited to join the shorts and animation branch are directors of this year’s Oscar-winning animated feature, Mark Gustafson (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio), and animated short, Charlie Mackesy (The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse), as well as nominees Joel Crawford (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On), Lachlan Pendragon (An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It), Sara Gunnarsdóttir (My Year of Dicks) and João Gonzalez & Bruno Caetano (Ice Merchants). Notable names also include Baobab Studios co-founder Maureen Fan, GKIDS President / exec producer David Jesteadt and veteran animator Nelson Shin, founder of South Korea’s Akom Production Co.
“The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. “They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide.”
