Streaming and distribution outfit Cineverse (formerly Cinedigm) has picked up North American rights to the Chinese CG fantasy adventure Warrior King, based on the epic Central Asian folk ballad of King Gesar traceable to the third or fourth century BCE. The film is slated to hit U.S. cinemas on August 25.
From Cineverse:
In this epic true story inspired by the legend of King Gesar, a young man grows up in exile in a world overrun by demons and monsters. When evil forces threaten his home, he returns to save his people and embrace his destiny as great hero and ruler.
Warrior King is directed by Lu Qi from a screenplay by Lu Wunan and Wang Yunsheng. Lu Qi’s inspiration for the film’s stylized CG animation reportedly came from the traditional Tibetan Buddhist fabric paintings known as thangka.
Cineverse’s Chief Content Officer Yolanda Macias commented, “Epic films are meant to be experienced on the big screen. Warrior King invites fans of fantasy animation to embark on a captivating co-viewing experience showcasing the extraordinary strength, intelligence and courage of King Gesar, the qualities that define a true warrior.”
