The good folks at Criterion home video will be carving up a 4K digital master of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio on Dec. 12, just in time for the holiday gift-giving season. The stop-motion movie, which won the Best Animated Feature Oscar earlier this year, offers a dark take on Carlo Collodi’s tale of a wooden toy that dreams of becoming a real boy. Directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson, the movie features the voices of Ewan McGregor, David Manning, Gregory Mann, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton and Tom Kenny.
The Criterion 2-disc edition of Pinocchio was supervised by its director and includes a bunch of bonus material, including a conversation with fantasy living legends Del Toro, Neil Gaiman (The Sandman) and Mark Gustafson. Here are the specifics:
