DC/Marvel Animation Director Jay Oliva Ascends ‘The White Tower’

Prolific animation director and storyboard artist Jay Oliva (Young Justice, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League Dark, Trese, RAID: Call of the Arbiter) has been tapped to helm the 3D CG-animated feature The White Tower. Announced this summer, the project is inspired by Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time fantasy epic and is in development with iwot and Squeeze Animation Studios.

Aimed at young adults, The White Tower will be set before the events of the book series, which are seen in Amazon Studios/Sony Pictures Television’s live-action series. The movie is based on an original screenplay by Zack Stentz (Thor). Per the previous announcement:

[The White Tower] is an action-adventure about a young girl with a special gift whose life is forever changed when evil visits her remote mountain village. Finding herself alone in a dangerous world, she must go to The White Tower to learn how to use her magical powers in order to save her family and friends. Rebellious and distrusting, she learns that friendship can be as powerful a weapon against evil as any form of magic.

The film is being produced by iwot’s Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon alongside Stentz, through Electric Brain Entertainment. Squeeze, part of the Cinesite group, will produce the animation in Quebec. Selvage and Mondragon are also executive producers on The Wheel of Time series (Season 2 now streaming).
