NYCC News: New Trailer Premieres for ‘Scott Pilgrim’ and ‘Invincible’ S2, FOX’s ‘Grimsburg’ Gets a Jan. ‘24 Premiere

It was a big day for animation at New York Comic Con, (Oct. 12-15 at the Javitz Center) . Netflix released the official trailer and new images for the upcoming anime series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which premieres globally on November 17. During their panel at The Javits Center, executive producers/writers/co-showrunners Bryan Lee O’Malley and Ben David Grabinski confirmed that Julian Cihi will voice the Katayanagi Twins (Kyle and Ken).

The new show kicks off when Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, and discovers he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. But this time, things get even more complicated. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off revisits and reimagines the beloved cult classic, taking Ramona Flowers, her evil exes, Scott, and his friends off on a mysterious new action-packed journey to find love.

The anime series reunites the original film cast to reprise their roles, including Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flowers), Satya Bhabha (Matthew Patel), Kieran Culkin (Wallace Wells), Chris Evans (Lucas Lee), Anna Kendrick (Stacey Pilgrim), Brie Larson (Envy Adams), Alison Pill (Kim Pine), Aubrey Plaza (Julie Powers), Brandon Routh (Todd Ingram), Jason Schwartzman (Gideon Graves), Johnny Simmons (Young Neil), Mark Webber (Stephen Stills), Mae Whitman (Roxie Richter), and Ellen Wong (Knives Chau).

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was created for television by executive producers and co-showrunners O’Malley and Ben David Grabinski. The original film’s director, co-writer and producer Edgar Wright serves as executive producer alongside Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, Adam Siegel, Michael Bacall and Eunyoung Choi. Award-winning animation house Science SARUand UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, produce for Netflix.

Another splashy animated debut was the second season trailer for Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed superhero series Invincible. The trailer premiered at a panel devoted to the popular Prime Video panel, featuring creator Robert Kirkman and showrunner and exec producer Simon Racioppa. The first half of the eight-episode second season premieres on Nov. 3, with new episodes airing weekly. The second half will premiere in early 2024. The popular series, which debuted in March 2021, centers on the Skybound/Image comic by Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, and charts the adventures of Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who discovers that his father is the most powerful superhero in the world. Mark struggles to rebuild his life after being betrayed by Nolan in the first season and now faces a host of new threats, all while battling his greatest fear — that he might become his father without even knowing it.

The voice cast includes Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, Zazie Beetz, Grey DeLisle, Chris Diamantopoulos, Walton Goggins, Gillian Jacobs, Jason Mantzoukas, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Kevin Michael Richardson, Seth Rogen, and J.K. Simmons.Kirkman, David Alpert, Catherine Winder, Simon Racioppa, Margaret M. Dean, Rogen, and Evan Goldberg executive produce, and the co-executive producers are Helen Leigh and Walker.

Meanwhile, FOX-TV announced that Jon Hamm’s new adult animated series Grimsburg will join the network’s Sunday Animation Domination block on January 7, following the NFL Doubleheader game. The series centers on gifted detective Marvin Flute  (Hamm), “who can catch a cannibal clown and correctly identify a mid-century modern armoire, but there’s one mystery he still can’t crack — himself,” per the official synopsis. To do that, he must return to Grimsburg, a town where everyone has a secret, and redeem himself in the eyes of his fellow detectives, his ferocious ex-wife, and his lovably unstable son.

The cast includes Erinn Hayes as Harmony Flute, Rachel Dratch as Stan Flute, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Rufis Pentos and Mr. Flesh, Kevin Michael Richardson as Detective Greg Summers, and Greg Chun as Lieutenant John Kang. The show is produced by Fox Entertainment’s Bento Box Entertainment. Catlan McClelland and Matthew Schlissel created the series and serve as co-executive producers alongside showrunner Chadd Gindin. Jon Hamm, Gail Berman, Hend Baghdady and Connie Tavel are exec producers of the show.
