Chinese Animated Fantasy ‘Deep Sea’ Gets Limited U.S. Release with Viva

Family audiences and animation lovers of all ages have the chance to take in an unusual cinematic offering this Thanksgiving weekend. Viva Pictures has announced that Deep Sea, the acclaimed new CG-animated film from Monkey King: Hero Is Back (2015) director Tian Xiaopeng, will play in select markets across the U.S. from November 24.

Theatrical engagements are slated for Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Atlanta, with more participating locations to be announced.

Described by film critics as “mesmerizing,” “stunning” and “one of the most unusual and insane animated films” one reviewer has ever seen, Deep Sea has screened in the official selections at festivals including Annecy, Fantasia, Berlinale, Tribeca and Sitges, and won honors for best VFX in animation from the Shanghai International Film Festival and Sichuan TV Festival.

Synopsis: A young girl named Shenxiu is unexpectedly swept into the sea during a family cruise and stumbles upon a mysterious restaurant under the waves. There, she meets the scheming head chef Nanhe, and his ragtag crew of adorable otters and sarcastic walruses. They join forces to save the restaurant and reunite Shenxiu with her long-lost mother in a kaleidoscopic, dreamlike world of swirling color and dazzling views.

Deep Sea (Shen Hai / 深海) is produced by October Media and Enlight Pictures in Beijing. The movie’s distinctive look inspired by traditional Chinese ink painting took seven years to develop, realized by Tian Xiaopeng’s inventive application of particle-based 3D animation techniques.
