New figures compiled by a surprising source, SuperCasinoSites, have placed the origin tale of Illumination’s beloved super villain, Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022), at the top of the U.S. Netflix charts of most-watched movies in 2023.
The website which normally tracks online gambling news and ratings decided to crunch some very different numbers for a recent blog post, which runs down the top streaming titles on the platform worldwide, based on the weekly Top 10s published by Netflix from January 1 to October 29. Netflix is available in more than 190 countries, reporting 247 million-plus subscribers worldwide as of Q3 2023.
Another Illumination title, Sing (2016), also proved especially popular in several Latin American countries, including Mexico and Chile. Meanwhile, the kids’ phenom PAW Patrol: The Movie (2021) from Paramount, Nickelodeon & Spin Master remained a top performing title in 20 countries around the world (U.K., Australia, Germany, et al). Other animated standouts in the movie list included DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods: A New Age (2020) topping the list in Croatia and Universal 1440’s hybrid Woody Woodpecker movie (2017) running amok on Brazilian screens.
As far as animated series, we have one super-powered standout in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, produced by Tokyo studio MAPPA and released this year, which kept Japanese audiences entertained as the No. 1 series on Netflix in the country. (Anime fans in the States can watch it on Crunchyroll.)
