Things get more existential and slightly less belch-y in new “early look” footage for Rick and Morty: The Anime, which is due to launch on Adult Swim sometime this year. The Japanese-language Rick and Morty dub stars Yohei Tadano and Keisuke Chiba reprise their roles as Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith.
Written and directed by Takashi Sano (Rick and Morty vs. Genocider, Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil), Tower of God), the 10-episode project was announced in 2022 and is being produced by Sola Entertainment and with animation by Telecom Animation for Adult Swim. The short that sparked the concept, Shogun & Samurai, premiered online in March 2020 and was produced by Studio DEEN.
Executive producers are Jason Demarco and Joseph Chou. Key staff includes art director Arisa Matsuzawa (TAF), color designer Makiko Kojima (Studio Road), CGI director Sou Ki (Souki Prod.), special effects supervisor Kaori Kobayashi, composite director Tatsuo Noguchi (T.D.F.), editor Yoshihiro Kasahara and sound director Koichi Iizuka, with music by Tetsuya Takahashi and music production by Terra-Musica.
Meanwhile, word is that the eighth season of the Emmy-winning original Rick and Morty will arrive to amuse and confuse fans in 2025, following delays due to the five-month Writers Guild of America strike last year. The last episode of Season 7 premiered on Adult Swim in December, and the full season (10 episodes) is available to stream on Max as of today. As previously announced, S7 will arrive on disc in March, complete with a fine selection of goo-splattered bonus features.
Details of Season 8 are TBA, but Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden are expected to return as the new voices of Rick and Morty, respectively, having replaced series co-creator Justin Roiland for the most recent season.
