Kate Micucci — half of the popular parody musical duo Garfunkle & Oates and known to animation fans for voicing Webby in DuckTales, Scooby-Doo‘s Velma, Sadie in Steven Universe and many other roles — has launched development on an animated series adapted from Toy, the Keenspot comic created by writer Brett Murphy and artist Wilson Gandolpho. Micucci will produce, voice star and create original music for the project.
Also on board the project is Tobi Wilson, a senior writer for Cartoon Network favorite The Amazin gWorld of Gumball, who will serve as showrunner and co-producer. Keenspot’s Chris Crosby and Bobby Crosby will also produce, alongside David Campiti for animation provider Glass House Studios in central Florida.
Toy follows the escapades of Toy, a floppy-eared genius inventor who also happens to be … a toy. Together with his BFFS, a perpetually peckish crocodile and a plucky human girl, Toy defends the town of Rockledge from the machinations of a nefarious cat CEO, Lily Buttercup, who will stop at nothing to outdo Toy’s inventions with her own doomsday creations. Issue No. 1 launched in March 2023.
Murphy and Gandolpho are also the creators of Sumerian’s Paranormal Hitmen (in series development at eOne). The duo will be announcing a new sci-fi adventure at Comic-Con this summer.
Keenspot is due to launch its first animated adaption, Grubbs, this holiday season. Based on the comics by Max Weaver, the project was announced in 2022 under writer/showrunner M.J. Offen and will voice star Wil Wheaton, Jerry O’Connell, Jodie Sweetin, Jaleel White, Felicia Day, Jason Marsden and Debi Derryberry.
