Pixar Animation Studios has announced the next release from its experimental storytelling program, SparkShorts, will also be the first stop-motion project from the in-house talent incubator. Titled Self, the short film will launch on Disney+ on February 2.
Per the studio’s X post:
Directed by Searit Huluf and produced by Eric Rosales, Self is a story of a wooden doll’s journey of self-discovery as she strives to fit in and blend in with her peers.
Huluf worked as a production coordinator for SparkShorts before tackling her own film; she has also contributed to Pixar feature films in different capacities, including credits as part of the studio’s cultural trust for Oscar winner Soul, and as an editorial coordinator on Turning Red. Huluf last year launched her live-action short Buna on the festival circuit last year, following her debut with Gamers in 2019 (awarded a Special Mention at One-Reeler Short Film Competition).
Rosales is a Pixar veteran, serving as a rendering coordinator/manager, sweatbox coordinator and production coordinator on feature film projects including The Incredibles (2004), Cars (2006) — which features an automotive tribute in the Nitroade team hauler “Eric Roadales,” Ratatouille (2007), WALL-E (2008), Up (2009) and Inside Out (2015), as well as sets coordinator on Monsters University (2013) and providing additional production support for Brave (2012).
Disney+ is home to previous compelling and award-winning SparkShorts films, including Burrow, Float, Kitbull, Loop, Nona, Out, Purl, Smash and Grab, Twenty Something and Wind.
