Awards Updates: GLAAD, NAACP Image & ACE Eddie Honors for Animation

While the feature film category skipped over animated nominees Lightyear (Pixar) and Strange World (Disney) — going to Universal’s Bros — animation braving new frontiers of queer representation was still part of the 34th GLAAD Media Awards celebration last night. The awards recognize and honor media for fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives.

The animated winners are:

Outstanding Children’s Programming

  • “Adoptasaurus Rex” Dino Ranch (Disney Junior) – WINNER
  • “Family Recipe” Sesame Street (HBO Max)
  • Firebuds (Disney Junior)

Outstanding Kids & Family Programming – Animated

This week also marks the 55th NAACP Image Awards, which will be celebrated with a two-hour live TV special on Saturday, March 16 on BET and CBS. These honors celebrate Black excellence across film, television, music and more. (Full list available at naacpimageawards.net.)

Among the talents and projects deemed exceptional for the Animation, Motion Picture and Short Form categories, the multi-award-winning, broadly acclaimed Sony Pictures Animation/Marvel sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was awarded Outstanding Animated Motion Picture. Also recognized were:

  • The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Season 2 (Disney+) — Outstanding Animated Series
  • Lil’ Ruby — Outstanding Short Form (Animated)
  • Doggyland (YouTube) — Outstanding Short Form Series (Comedy or Drama)

And catching up from earlier in the month, the 74th ACE Eddie Awards were held March 3 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, recognizing outstanding editing in 14 categories (see the full list at americancinemaeditors.org). The American Cinema Editors awarded the following animated productions:
