‘Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond’ Gets Animated Series Adaptation from Submarine, Rebel Maverick

Satyantani DasGupta’s middle-grade fantasy book series Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond (Scholastic) will be adapted to a new animated series, due to debut for market buyers internationally and in the U.S. this year. The project is produced by Amsterdam-based Submarine (Undone, Apollo 10 1/2) and the queer, Afro-Latinx writing/production team of Rebel Maverick (Matt Nicholas and Nastassja Kayln).

Launched in 2018 with the award-winning Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond: The Serpent’s Secret, the books follow a New Jersey middle-schooler who discovers she has an interdimensional demon-slaying destiny, as an Indian princess from a fantastical otherworld of myth and magic. The second installment, Game of Stars (2019) made the New York Times bestseller list, and was followed by The Chaos Curse (2020). The books have spawned two spinoff book series, The Fire Queen and The Secrets of the Sky.

The animated series will focus on the events of the first book. Author-illustrator DasGupta will adapt the stories with Emmy-winning animation writer Michael Ryan (Wolf Boy and the Everything Factory, Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?), and the duo wo write the pilot with Ryan serving as head writer for the series. Executive producers are Submarine’s Bruno Felix (Co-Founder) and Phil Molloy (Head of Development) and Rebel Maverick’s Nicholas, Kayln, Jane Kim Yang (Head of Development) and Victoria Nguyen (VP of Development).
