Super Mario Bros. Returns to the Big Screen with Second Illumination-Nintendo Movie

In honor of #MAR10Day, Illumination and Nintendo today announced that they are producing a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros., following the smash success of 2023’s top-performing animated feature The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.36 billion worldwide) as well as the highest-grossing video-game adaptation and Illumination’s biggest release.

The newly announced return to the world of Super Mario Bros. is slated for release on April 3, 2026 in the U.S., and many additional markets globally with select territories releasing throughout that month.

The film will be produced by Chris Meledandri, Founder and CEO of Illumination, and Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director, Fellow of Nintendo. The Super Mario Bros. Movie helmers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will be back in their directors’ chairs, joined by writer Matthew Fogel. The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures.

It has not been confirmed which of the all-star voice cast from the previous movie; including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, will be back for Level 2.
