Abano & Letrario Announce Animated Feature ‘Mu-Ki-Ra’

Spanish studio Abano Productions (Unicorn Wars) and Colombia’s Letrario have partnered for a new 2D animated feature film, titled Mu-Ki-Ra, which will be showcased during the Cannes Marché du Film’s dedicated Animation Day. The project is conceived and directed by Colombian actress, screenwriter and producer Estefanía Piñeres Duque (Wild District, Sicosexual), who co-wrote the film with María Barro Guntín.

Mu- Ki-Ra s set in a land stalked by terrifying plant-monsters. The story centers on a 13-year-old girl named Cleo whose little brother is devoured by one of these creatures. With the help of a magical old woman, Cleo sets out to find the monster responsible — Mukira — and bring her brother home.

According to Piñeres, the filmmakers are pursuing a vibrant aesthetic inspired by the art of Brecht Evens and traditional Latin American craftsmanship, particularly those of the Emberá and Kuna peoples. The production has already attached several Spanish-language voice stars, including Maria Fernanda Marín, Isa Mosquera, Carmenza Gómez, and Witsey Mena.

Piñeres and Letrario previously collaborated on her 2020 animated short Color-ido (Color-less), which screened in official selections at Rotterdam, AniMaze (Canada) and Pixelatl (Mexico).
