New ‘Asterix’ Animated Movie Launching at Cannes Film Market

René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo’s plucky Gaul hero gets his latest big screen reincarnation in Asterix, the Kingdom of Nubia. Based on the popular French comics series launched 65 years ago, the CG-animated feature is launching international sales at the Cannes Marché du Film through SND Films.

Directed by Gobelins alum and former DreamWorks animator Alexandre Heboyan (Mune: Guardian of the Moon) and written by filmmaking duo Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière, (What’s in a Name?, The Best Is Yet to Come, Cannes festival premiere The Count of Monte-Cristo), the film will follow Asterix and his loyal companion Obelix on a journey to the Kingdom of Nubia.

Located along the Nile in what is today southern Egypt and northern Sudan, the region of ancient Nubia was home to one of Africa’s earliest civilizations, the Kerma culture, and later the vibrant Kush Empire.

Asterix, the Kingdom of Nubia is produced by M6 Studio; SND Films is the commercial arm of the France’s M6. The studio produced the preceding films Asterix, the Mansions of the Gods and Asterix, the Secret of the Magic Potion. This new installment is expected to arrive in theaters in 2026.

Asterix is an evergreen hit in France and beyond, with more than 200 million books sold. The franchise has spawned 10 animated features and six live-action movies. Netflix is developing a 3D CG series with publisher Hachette and Toulouse-based animation studio TAT Productions (The Jungle Bunch, Pil’s Adventures).
