Sony Pictures Entertainment today released a second official trailer for Harold and the Purple Crayon, the new live-action/2D/3D hybrid feature based on the classic kids’ book by Crockett Johnson, directed by Oscar-nominated Blue Sky alum Carlos Saldanha (Ferdinand, Rio film, Ice Age: The Meltdown & Dawn of the Dinosaurs). The film arrives in theaters on August 2.
The new preview gives fans a sweeping sample of the magic (and whimsical chaos) unleashed by imaginative Harold (Zachary Levi) and his transforming friends Moose (Lil Rel Howery) and Porcupine (Sex Education‘s Tanya Reynolds). We also see the machinations of a shady character who convinces Harold to share the “the most powerful, extraordinary stuff on Earth” — a figure played by Jemaine Clement we know from the cast list only as …. Gary.
Synopsis: Inside of his book, adventurous Haroldcan make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life — and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends’ creativity to save both the real world and his own. Harold and the Purple Crayon is the first film adaptation of the beloved children’s classic that has captivated young readers for decades.
The cast also features Benjamin Bottani, Alfred Molina and Zooey Deschanel.
Saldanha directs from a screenplay by David Guion & Michael Handelman, who have previously penned CG-laced family adventures Slumberland and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. John Davis is producer, with Jeremy Stein and Jenny Hinkey executive producing.
