Netflix today offered a run-down of the cool movies heating up its Summer 2024 slate, as shared via Tudum. While the schedule ranges from “blistering action movies and raucous comedies to tense thrillers and incredible animated films for your whole family,” we have to admit a special interest in the latter!
Notably, it looks like the new SpongeBob adventure Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie has lassoed a specific release date, debuting August 2 on the streamer.
Synopsis: When Bikini Bottom and all its denizens are suddenly scooped out of the ocean, Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob SquarePants journey to Texas to save the town from a villainous plot.
The new movie is helmed by TV veteran Liza Johnson (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Silicon Valley, The Last of Us) in her animation directorial debut, and written by Emmy winner Kaz (Camp Lazlo!, Phineas and Ferb), a SpongeBob SquarePants staff writer and developer of spinoffs Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show.
Carolyn Lawrence reprises her role of a quarter century as Sandy Cheeks, alongside SpongeBob SquarePants co-stars Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Bill Fagerbakke, Mr. Lawrence and Rodger Bumpass, The Sandy Cheeks Movie also features the voices of Wanda Sykes, Johnny Knoxville, Craig Robinson, Grey DeLisle, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino and Matty Cardarople.
Netflix’s animated summer movie offerings also include Thelma the Unicorn on May 17 (read all about it here!) and Ultraman: Rising on June 14 (look out for our feature story in the June/July issue of Animation Magazine).
You can check out the full lineup on Tudum.
