New ‘Blue Beetle’ Series to Fly with Warner Bros. Animation and Miguel Puga

It looks like Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle will be spreading his wings in the animation realm in the near future. Deadline reported today that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are developing  an animated series based on the popular character with Miguel Puga (exec producer of Nickelodeon’s The Casagrandes) tapped as the showrunner and director, and Cristian Martinez (Good Trouble) set as the series’ writer.

Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alocer, who directed and wrote the 2023 live-action feature respectively, will exec producer the show as well as John Rikard who was also the executive producer of the movie. The show will be overseen by Galen Vaisman for DC Studios. The studio has not released any info on the storyline or main characters featured in the new show.

Blue Beetle was first introduced in 1939 in a comic-book by Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski published by Fox Comics and later owned by Charlton Comics. The Jamie Reyes incarnation of the character was created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers and Cully Hamner, and made his first appearance in the Feb. 2006 edition of Infinite Crisis #3. Reyes is the third character to become Blue Beetle in the series.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the live-action feature, which was released last August, starred Xolo Maridunea as a recent college graduate who receives an armor packed with superpowers after being accidentally being chosen by an ancient alien relic known as the Scarab. The movie, which also starred Adriana Barraza, Damian Alcazar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Guillen and George Lopez, received strong marks from critics and went on to gross over $130.788 million at the box office worldwide.
